Weight Loss and The Missing Peace

Shorts and bathing suit season is just around the corner. Consequently, some of my clients are turning their attention to weightloss issues. They claim to have tried every diet under the sun, and every exercise regimen. Weight loss occurs, however, they are not able to maintain their desired weight.

A nutritious diet and moderate exercise are part of any healthy lifestyle, but there is something more to it. Too often we get caught up in the urgency of dieting and exercising and do not take the time to really ask ourselves some key questions. Getting answers to these questions will create an inner knowing that will propel you into a new way of being...not just doing.

Ask yourself these 5 key questions and propel yourself forward.

  1. What is my goal?
  2. What are the steps I need to take to reach my goal?
  3. How will reaching this goal affect my life?
  4. What is stopping me from taking these steps?
  5. What will I do tomorrow to begin the process of attaining my goal?

What follows is a recent exercise one of my clients recently completed:

1) What is my goal?

  • Goal - To construct and maintain a healthy lifestyle - (To lose weight, tone up, and build muscle)

2) What are the steps I need to take to achieve my goal

  • Strength training 30 minutes every other day
  • Eat 5 healthy meals per day - Breakfast, snack, lunch, snack, dinner
  • Drink 6-8 glasses of water per day
  • Take prescribed vitamin regimen

  • How will reaching this goal affect my life?

3) How will reaching this goal affect my life?

  • More energy
  • Increased confidence
  • Increased memory
  • Ability to look good in a swim suit
  • Ability to shop for clothes with ease
  • Ability to hike (with friends and clients)
  • Easier to play golf
  • Great looking arms
  • Flat abs
  • Ability to help clients with similar challenges

4) What is stopping me from takig these steps?

  • Workout room is messy
  • Lack of motivation
  • Guilt (doing for myself when other things need to be done)
  • Laziness (spend too much time with tv)
  • Chaos (not organized)
  • Time Management

5) What will I do tomorrow to begin the process of creating a healthy lifestyle?

  • Exercise 20 minutes on the elliptical trainer
  • Drink 6-8 glasses of water
  • Take the vitamins prescribed for me by my doctor
  • Eat breakfast, snack, lunch, snack, dinner
  • Create a collage that incorporates how reaching this goal will affect my life.
  • Next week - Paint the workout room and decorate it.
